Blogger Bride Devon Rachel’s Wedding

Over the past year, we’ve had a front-row seat as our dear blogger bride Devon Rachel planned her big day. From proposal to dress shopping, engagement shoot and every moment in between, we’ve grown to feel so a part of her planning journey and believe it or not, the big reveal is finally here. It’s a day for the (modern) storybooks, and thanks to the work of Jana Williams and Candlelight Films we get an inside look. Read on for the day in sweet Devon’s words!

From Devon RachelDevon from here with some rather exciting news: I said I Do! Chandler and I tied the knot. It was such an honor to take you along on the journey of planning as the first Style Me Pretty Blogger Bride. And after a whirlwind of newlywed bliss, I’m overjoyed to bring you a piece of our big day.

With our wedding, we wanted to mix traditional and non-traditional elements. I fell in love with the Joule Hotel because it fit my taste for modern yet livable décor with an LA vibe. I felt like the hotel suited us; we’re part Texas and a dash of California. The ceremony was held on the roof of the Joule Hotel where two floral archways complete with ombre rose petals lined the aisle. I purposely didn’t take a peek of the décor (and you know I wanted to!) before and I’m so glad I didn’t. I was overwhelmed with joy when I walked down the aisle and was in awe of how great Bella Flora did with the flowers.

Remember my “How to Choose Wedding Flowers” post? Well, our ceremony and reception were decked in beautiful blooms. I wanted guests to feel like they walked into a secret garden – and I think we achieved that! My bouquet was a very whimsical mix of gorgeous pink, peach, and white flowers. My sweet bridesmaids looked unbelievable in their different Amsale gowns. I chose three different colors as well – I really wanted to be unique with the styling and I was so pleased!

For my bridal look, I wanted to feel like a modern day Brigitte Bardot and I feel like we achieved that with my dress, makeup and hair. My first dress (flashback to that first Dress Shopping post) is by Oscar de la Renta and it was not originally a one-shoulder gown. I had them remove one side to really showcase the bow and it was so perfect for me. Can we talk about that huge bow? It makes my heart pitter-patter. I teamed up with Blushington and Dry Bar to do mine, my bridesmaids and both mother’s hair and makeup. It was such a fun time having both teams in our hotel room. They made everyone look and feel so amazing, just like in our Bachelorette Celebration post!

For the reception, we chose to bring in my love of black and white stripes to the menus and chairs at the head table. Floral runners lined each table next to candles and beautiful gold-rimmed glassware. Since I was a little girl, I dreamt of having a vintage Rolls Royce to take us away and a black and white checkerboard dance floor. I was so unbelievably happy to see both of these dreams come to life. And the flowers adorning the back of the car were just cherries on top of an amazing night.

Dancing has always and will always be important to us, so we wanted our guests to have plenty of room and great music to dance to. I have to say, our band, Limelight, completely blew us away. They brought the house down and we danced all night! Everyone had a great time and that’s what we wanted. Right outside the ceremony, mirrored tables housed my non-traditional guestbook: Vogue Weddings. Guests signed on each beautiful artistic page of the gorgeous coffee table book. We now display the book in our home and I love taking a moment to look through. We are incredibly fortunate to have such amazing love stories to look up to in our family. I wanted to showcase and celebrate the love over the years, so we placed black and white photos of our grandparents and parents’ wedding days on a mirrored table outside the ceremony.

I cannot explain the feeling of overwhelming of love I felt walking down the aisle. I walked arm in arm with my sweet father as I watched my husband to be cry tears of joy. I did not expect him to cry! I truly believe Chandler and I are soul mates and I am so thankful for him. In that moment, we made the most important commitment of our lives: to each other. It was so special! I thank everyone involved for making it happen.

I hope you enjoyed these moments from our wedding! It was truly the best day of my life and I am overjoyed to share it with all of you.

xoxo, Devon Rachel

Garden Venue

From Kaysha Weiner PhotographerOur super sweet couple met at the UCLA Library 9 years ago, and they both love to read so it makes sense that they’d want to incorporate such a personal touch to their wedding. Thoughtful details like library card invitations, the couples initials made out of books for the sweetheart table, and a collection of vintage books that belonged to the bride’s mother and her family were pulled in to enhance the library romance.

The Smog Shoppe was the perfect setting for family and friends to witness this union. They were treated to yummy bites and a delicious dinner courtesy of Angie Orsino and her fantastic team from Tender Greens Catering. The seriously gorgeous florals were created by Twig & Twine, and the perfect ending to a lovely and heartfelt evening were the desserts by Sweet & Saucy.

Beautifully, what was more apparent then any theme was the true love these two felt for one another. Throughout the planning process I was able to see how much they cared for and complemented one another. It was a happy lesson in love and understanding and so wonderful to witness. I’ll admit I tend to get a tiny bit fluttery during wedding ceremonies, but usually no tears. That being said, I honest to goodness choked up when I heard her say during her vows “If someone had told me 9 years ago that I would marry the boy from the library, I would not have believed it. But I am so grateful and happy that my life has lead me to this moment with you” Gah. Love them.

Everything was perfectly encapsulated by the talented Kaysha, of Kaysha Weiner Photographer. She thoughtfully captured their personalities and family dynamic along with all of the prettiness of the day.

From The Bride…We met at a library where we both worked in college. When it was time to decide on a theme for our wedding, I knew I wanted it to be something that represented who we are but still simple. We’re both big readers, so a wedding that was inspired by books and libraries just made sense. The books in our centerpieces were mostly books that belonged to my mother and her siblings when they were growing up in the 60s. It was really special to me that I got to use something from my family in the wedding.

One of my favorite parts of the wedding was the soundtrack. Our DJs were amazing. There were so many moments during the wedding where I was smiling just because the music was so good.

My advice for people planning a wedding is that vendors are important. We asked a lot of questions before we hired our vendors. We looked for things like professionalism, punctuality, and attention to detail. By looking for these traits during the hiring process, we were more confident that our day would run smoothly.

My other advice is to do what you want. Weddings are expensive, and they go by in a flash. So don’t do what you think other people want or need, just focus on yourselves. Spend your money on what’s important to you.

Classic DC Art Museum Wedding

Fact: classic weddings will always and forever be my favorite. No buts about it. And when you’re marrying with the most timeless of days, what better spot to be but our nation’s capitol? Or the National Museum of Women In the Arts, to be specific. It’s the unbelievable setting of this black, white and gold affair and thanks to Vicki Grafton the party is just getting started. More right here!

From The Bride…Our story began, ironically, when Alfred’s friend approached me at a networking mixer. After learning that I went to undergrad in the city that Alfred was in town visiting from, his friend thought to introduce us. There was in instant connection between myself and Alfred and what followed was several years of long distance dating —I lived in Washington, DC and Alfred lived in North Carolina.

After weathering the storm of dating long distance, we really wanted our wedding to be special…to be the ultimate celebration of our love. We decided to keep our wedding party small so that we could focus on what was really important, becoming husband and wife!! I wasn’t the type of bride who had fantasized about what her wedding would be like so when it came time to plan all I knew was that I wanted the day to feel like us. I wanted a day that was beautiful and glamorous but still elegant and timeless. I didn’t have a theme for our wedding but I focused on a black/ivory/gold color palette because it embodied the understated beauty I envisioned for our day.

One of my favorite planning elements was our beautiful engraved wedding invitations. I put so much time into designing them and when it was finally time to mail them I was overwhelmed with all the other wedding planning. Alfred stepped in and helped me with everything from making envelope liners to picking out vintage stamps. It was quite the undertaking!! It was probably the only wedding task that we spent a large amount of time working on together and it transformed what could have been a tireless task into a treasured memory. Planning our ceremony was another special time in the planning process. I wanted to ensure every word spoken during the ceremony reflected the special bond that we share, so I wrote the entire ceremony which was officiated by my best friend from childhood. I labored over so many wedding decisions but this was one I never doubted for a minute. Surrounded by our family and friends, having my friend unite us in marriage, it was truly a magical experience.

After all the planning, the day really did go by in flash, I’m thankful for my family and friends that played a part and my wonderful vendors that helped bring my vision to life. Our wedding was a beautiful day, sometimes I close my eyes and mentally transport back to that day knowing the best part is that was just the beginning.
